Dave: Had a quick look this morning. It's pretty cool! Essentially it's a Google Earth of the sky.

Gareth: So you know how Microsoft bought the rights to the Battletech universe and basically just f*cked it up with MechAssault? Smith & Tinker is fixing that. I can't believe I didn't know about this until now.

Marcus: Apple font smoothing vs Microsoft font smoothing. Interesting comparison and rationales behind the two methods. When I saw Safari on Windows my first thought was "aargh why have Apple used that awful font smoothing?" It really jars on Windows, even though I use it every day on my Mac and think it looks lovely. Chris: I don't often get carried away by a Microsoft product, especially one that isn't even at the beta stage yet, but I've just spent quite a while this evening playing with the preview of something called Photosynth. Imagine taking a set of photos from Flickr, building a data set of points in the physical space, and then letting you navigate that 3D space seeing the photos mapped on to it, all zoomable in high pixel count goodness... It's difficult to explain hpw cool this is without seeing it, so why not watch Blaise Aguera y Arcas demonstrate Photosynth at TED instead?

chris: Perhaps what impressed me most about the demonstrator is the fact that it's running quite happily under Firefox on my machine here.

gareth: According to this gallery the photos are from May 2005 so no doubt everyone's already seen this and I'm just in the dark.
Marcus: It just so happens they're having a joint "unscripted onstage chat" with Walt Mossberg at the end of May.

Chris: Mmmm, Microsoft are really talking up the new release of Office. "Mr Capossela said their research showed that the vast majority of users adapted to the new interface very quickly. 'The people who take longer are the die-hard users; the expert Excel user,' he said." Right, so all the power users are screwed? That's really gonna persuade 'em to upgrade...

Gareth: A nice rant/look at the Zune music pricing scheme, which, as some guy on digg put, is rec*ckulous.

Gareth: A nice little summary of that Microsoft-Novell deal.
gareth: It mostly seems like Novell is paying Microsoft to recommend SUSE to people who want a windows and linux environment.

Gareth: Joint letter to the Open Source Community from Novell and Microsoft regarding their apparant alliance. This is pretty surprising (although I bet Dvorak will ramble about his *sshat predictions apparantly indicating this ages ago)

Marcus: "US regulators warn Europe against Apple iTunes laws".
Marcus: I love it when the US tries to legislate outside its own borders to protect home interests.
Marcus: Also, that the "director general of competition at the EC" is apparently called Philip Lowe "European regulator". Ace reporting, MacWorld.
Marcus: "Lowe told reporters he shared Barnett's concerns about proposals to impose restrictions on iTunes. Lowe also downplayed the disagreements over the Microsoft case."
Marcus: That's the spirit Lowe! You show these shady US corporate monopoly apologists that the EU won't back down over... oh.

Justin: Shock! the Firefox team have been invited to visit Microsoft at Redmond!
gareth: Well, they're not exactly on unfriendly terms. Microsoft even adopted the Firefox RSS feed icon as a standard by using it in IE7.
