: MSN Messenger for Mac 6.0 has been released, finally bringing it up to speed with the Windows version with all those lovely custom emoticons, personal status messages, and, er, stuff.
Marcus: I'd love to comment more, but all MSN 6.0 currently does when I run it is sit there spinning the "signing in" message for a long time before bursting into tears and crashing.
Marcus: [Much fiddling about ensues]
Marcus: Actually it's not too bad. A lot like MSN Messenger for Windows ought to be - all the good features (display my currently displaying song!), minus the horrendous adverts (none whatsoever on MSN for Mac, probably because only about five Mac owners use MSN) and those bloody awful Flash-screen-superimpose things that crash your computer.
Marcus: Inescapably large amounts of Windows Live branding all over the shop, though.
Marcus: MSN Messenger for Mac 6.0
Marcus: Oh yeah, and you can apparently chat to Yahoo! Messenger users.
justin: "those bloody awful Flash-screen-superimpose things that crash your computer" - what, your new Mac or your old PC? either way if your computer cant play a Flash file without crashing, then it's fair to say it's screwed,
gareth: Maybe it's just me, but I hate that extra crap such as emoticons - plain text is much more readable and far less annoying.
Marcus: Justin - I'm talking about PCs. Remember when we used to amuse ourselves by repeat-sending those Flash animation things to each other to see whose MSN would crash first? The Mac MSN doesn't have those. Woohoo.
justin: I think that period lasted about 10 minutes - but my PC never crashed. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with an obviously faulty PC system; perhaps that is why you have taken to Macs? My PC is basically Paul Burrell to my Princess Diana.
Marcus: My PC didn't crash - as said above, MSN crashed. It was notoriously unstable in the early releases that included the Flash rubbish.
Marcus: As to reliability - OS X keeps on trucking with zero faults to date, unlike XP, which I had to regularly reinstall to remove glitches and a tendency to slow down over time. That's a problem with all PCs, due to the way XP is written.

: "Users of Microsoft Messenger will be able to report suspected sexual predators directly to the police at the click of a mouse." (via)
Marcus: Some good discussion in the Slashdot comments about how much this concept is open to abuse.
Marcus: Like, "This will be heavily abused by kids just messing with each other. Yeah, no one would ever click this button as a joke on their friend."
Marcus: And my favourite, "Can't wait for the first messenger worm to start reporting everyone on your buddies list as sexual predators."
Marcus: Oh, and heads up to the Guardian journo who wrote the piece - MSN Messenger is an instant messenging service, not an "e-mail service". Like, duh.
justin: And the fact that the Messenger screenshot they have is from a Mac! and we all know Mac users are the biggest bunch of nonces there are.
