Dave: Good God that's disturbing.
american government: We don't support terrorism, except for when we do.
gareth: Damnit, that was meant to be torture (not terrorism). Man I'm tired.
Dave: In the interest of fairness, I think we should point out that the media is (once again) putting words into the mouth of yet another politician. Whether Dick supports water-boarding or not, he did not say he did. It makes me cross when this happens. It's rubbish reporting and it's a lazy way to demonise and undermine politicians. Don't get me wrong, I'm no big fan of Cheney, but I think I hate the media more.
justin: I got the feeling that he was implicitly referring to waterboarding no? but isn't that fun? like waterskiing or something?
Marcus: "Would you agree a dunk in water is a no-brainer?" "It's a no-brainer for me..."
Marcus: It's disingenous to claim that this isn't a clear mark of support for waterboarding. Still, that's spin doctoring for you.

Marcus: Goodbye to clips from The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and South Park.
Marcus: In my opinion this is a really stupid and likely damaging move for Comedy Central - a gigantic nose-thumbing to their primary market.
Marcus: These shows are clued-in, irreverent, smart humour vehicles made for intelligent people who also "get" the internet and are increasingly likely to watch their TV through YouTube/P2P/etc rather than an actual TV. Don't piss off your demographic.
justin: Well, "pissing off your demographic" is one thing, but lets face it - offering free shows means your demographic don't have to watch your TV channel nor watch adverts from your sponsors.

: Slate: "How Nokia can knock the iPod from its perch." (via)
Marcus: It doesn't exactly take a crystal ball to see the future of MP3/phone convergence and where that leaves the iPod (we've been saying it for over two years. Quite a lot.)
Marcus: In fairness, I suspect the situation in the US is muddied by their slightly backwards mobile phone situation, although they seem to be catching up.
Marcus: Anyway, here's my prediction for what Apple is going to do within the next 6-12 months, assuming those loud rumours of a 100% "Apple" phone are true:
Marcus: Apple are going to launch a music-oriented phone, probably with iPod nano-style 4GB or so flash RAM. Simultaneous to this they will launch a "mobile" version of the iTunes Store, enabling consumers to purchase tracks (and probably short video clips) directly from the handset.
Marcus: It will do quite well as a "fashion" phone, but due to the size of the mobile market, can never hope to dominate the way the iPod dominates the MP3 player market.
Marcus: Tune back within a year or so to see if my predictions were right. If they're wrong, ignore everything I just said. I'll delete it later when nobody's looking.
justin: The reviewer seems to be willfully ignoring this and this. I've been using the Sony Ericsson K series phones for 3 generations now - sticking in my memory cards and happily listening to music and doing all kids of things with them. Mobile phone music is already here.
Marcus: I don't know about "wilfully" ignoring Sony. There's plenty of other decent MP3 phones out there too (and remember the US may not have the same phones as the UK, and this is a US article).
Marcus: It's just that Nokia is "getting it" more than the other manufacturers - an ergonomic, music-centred phone with a large built-in storage capacity that's soon going up to 8GB.
Marcus: The trick is getting it done right - and I'd venture that the problem with a lot of phones right now is not the fact that they can play music (that's easy-peasy and most new phones can do it). It's that it's not idiot proof user friendly enough to get music onto the phone. That's what Apple will be angling for with a combined and solid software/hardware approach. (That's a big part of what won them the MP3 player market.)
Marcus: Early adopters (I've been playing MP3s and video using a Treo years before most people) are prepared to suffer a certain amount of hacking about and fiddling to get stuff to work. The trick is to make it mass-market and simple. And attractive to use. Nobody's quite got that yet.
Marcus: This guy reckons that the Apple phone won't even have music playback, which is an interesting idea that would completely doom it in the UK for starters.
Marcus: I think the Business Week article "Another Music Phone? Yawn..." is right on the money.

: Hong Kong games hardware importers Lik Sang have been put out of business, apparently because of "multiple Sony lawsuits". (via)

Marcus: And, amusingly, the press release lists a whole bunch of Sony Europe execs who bought import Sony stuff through Lik Sang: "Ray Maguire (Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Alan Duncan (UK Marketing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Chris Sorrell (Creative Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Rob Parkin (Development Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited)."

justin: I dont really have a problem with this, apart from the really tinny sound. When the speakers get better themusic will sound a bit better. The thing is though, it's all done by chavs - who don't respect anything or anyone, so a ban or any kind of posters simply will not work. I think I'd be inclined to play my music loud as well to interfere with theirs meaning we either have silence or nothing.
